Brief Biography
I was born in Bucharest, Romania. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering (1992) and a Ph.D. degree (2000) in Electronic Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania. In 2001, I joined the Computer Vision and Systems Laboratory at Laval University (Quebec, Canada) as a postdoctoral researcher and became an Assistant Professor at Laval in 2003. I moved to the University of Victoria in 2005.
I am currently a Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. My expertise is in image processing, computer vision, and pattern recognition. My research interests span computer vision-based environmental monitoring, document image analysis, and medical image analysis. I teach courses in computer vision and medical image processing. I am a Senior IEEE Member and have served as the first Vice-President of the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR) from 2018-2021.
